Never Sit Next to the Dragon

Seen from Nell's seat, a lone broad-shouldered young man sits at the empty back table with chairs cleared around him.

I looked. Obviously I looked.

He sat at the back with his hands folded and his notebook shut, and the chairs on both sides of him had that careful empty look, like the room had agreed to leave a hole there.

Synopsis

I was working at a laundromat and failing my online classes when Sundermoor Academy mailed me a student file. It says my kind is pending. Everyone else here can shift or cast or do something useful. I can make a vending machine hate me. The school gives me one clear rule: avoid the dragon shifter at the back table. Cormac is supposed to be dangerous. He's also the only person here who looks at me like I'm a riddle worth solving instead of a problem. I sit next to him anyway. Now the whole school is watching, and Cormac looks at me like I'm a riddle worth solving. I just hope he likes the answer.
