Never Sit Next to the Dragon

Cormac looks at Nell with something like wonder, one corner of his mouth lifting into a small smile.

And then Cormac looked at me like I'd said something in a language he used to speak and had mostly forgotten.

He smiled. Barely. One corner, gone in a second.

I felt stupidly proud of it, the way I felt about the vending machine that gave me two sodas.

Synopsis

I was working at a laundromat and failing my online classes when Sundermoor Academy mailed me a student file. It says my kind is pending. Everyone else here can shift or cast or do something useful. I can make a vending machine hate me. The school gives me one clear rule: avoid the dragon shifter at the back table. Cormac is supposed to be dangerous. He's also the only person here who looks at me like I'm a riddle worth solving instead of a problem. I sit next to him anyway. Now the whole school is watching, and Cormac looks at me like I'm a riddle worth solving. I just hope he likes the answer.
