Renata carried champagne along the Sartori dock in her apron, and nobody at the party looked twice at her face.
Everyone here knew her name. They used it like an order.
Fiorella stood under the dock lights in pale silk, her hand on Adrian's sleeve.
Fiorella: Listen, everyone. I have the best news of the year.
Fiorella: Adrian and I are engaged.
The dock broke into applause. Renata's hands went cold around the tray.
Adrian found her across the crowd, and he started walking.
Adrian: This was yours.
He dropped a thin gold ring onto her tray, between two glasses.
Adrian: Pawn it. It's worth more than you are.
Somebody behind her laughed, and the sound went through her like cold water.
Fiorella: Don't look so tragic. He was never yours. You were the help who got ideas.
Vittorio: Enough of that face.
Her father crossed the boards and slapped her, hard enough to split her lip.
Blood ran warm to her chin. Nobody moved to help her.
Beatrice: Go wash that off, Renata. You're ruining the pictures.
A drunk guest crowded her into the rail and pushed his hand under her apron.
He squeezed her thigh and said he'd pay fifty for an hour on her knees.
A hand closed on the drunk man's wrist and bent it until he squealed.
Saverio: Touch her again and I'll take the hand off at the wrist.
Saverio had watched her take the ring and the slap without making a sound.
Now his eyes stopped on her blood, and his jaw went tight.
Saverio: Show me the hand that did that.
Vittorio: Don't be dramatic, Vescari. She's staff. Staff knows what it's for.
Vittorio: You want to be wanted? Spread your legs off my dock. Shame me again and you'll sail on a boat that never docks.
The shame hit her harder than the slap had.
Renata set the tray down, turned, and walked away with her back straight.
Behind the dock crane, the music went thin and the air tasted of rust and salt.
Saverio: People come back here to hide. Or to be found.
Renata: Then why are you here, Mr. Vescari?
Saverio: Because you did not come back out.
His gray eyes went straight to her mouth and stayed there.
He turned her chin with two fingers, gentle as a doctor, and wiped the blood with his thumb.
Saverio: Say the name, and I'll finish this party early.
Renata: And what does that cost me?
Saverio: One word and I'll go. Say nothing and I stay.
Renata said nothing at all.
His mouth came down on hers, and her cut lip stung and she did not care.
She kissed him back with everything she had swallowed all night.
His hand spread warm across her back, and she pulled him closer by the jacket.
Salt, rust, and him. She wanted all of it.
He pulled back first, breathing hard, and held her face in both hands.
Saverio: You are not the help to me.
Then he was gone into the dark, and her mouth was still burning.
All her life she had been unchosen. Now a dangerous man had kissed her like she mattered. Was that rescue, or a price?
