For a long moment nobody in the hall answered him. Yvette's fingers curled around the locket until her knuckles went white.
Tiernan: The locket. Put it in my hand.
Yvette looked at her mother. Serena gave a small, cold nod, the way she might let a child hold a toy.
Yvette: It's mine. It goes on the block in an hour.
Tiernan turned the locket over once and held the clasp up to the light.
Tiernan: There's a raven in a ring under this hinge. Struck when the piece was made, not scratched in last night.
Tiernan: This locket is my sister's.
Lyle laughed first, loud and easy, the way a man laughs when he thinks he is safe.
Lyle: Your sister's at home, Ravell. Philippa. Everyone in this room has met her.
Tiernan: Philippa is my parents' adopted daughter. The girl born to them was taken out of a hospital nursery at four days old.
The hall made a sound like a held breath. Serena's pearls clicked once against her collarbone.
Serena: Then take your grief to the police. Not to my auction.
Tiernan: I did. That is how I found the trust.
He set a folded page on the marble beside the locket.
Tiernan: An account in my sister's name, opened the week she was born. Every year it paid a sum to the family that kept her.
Tiernan: Your signature is on the first payment, Mrs. Ashgrove. In your own hand.
For one ugly second Serena looked like a woman doing sums.
Serena: She has a room here. A uniform. I fed her.
Tiernan: The trust fed her. You took a wage for it.
Lyle: She's a stray. She scrubs my bathroom and eats what the cook throws out.
Tiernan: Say one more word about my sister and I will ruin your family before that clock strikes.
Rosamund stood very still with blood drying at her eyebrow. Something in her chest was coming loose, like a knot pulled free.
Tiernan turned to her, and his voice changed. Quieter. Certain.
Tiernan: Rosamund. Come here.
He took her arm the way a brother holds a sister at a wedding, and turned her to face the room.
Tiernan: Rosamund Ravell. My mother is Eilish Ravell. She kept your nursery exactly as it was.
Across the hall, Thaddeus March watched the maid lift her chin and did not look away.
Serena: She was nobody. She would have been nothing without me.
Rosamund: You told me every door in this city would close. It seems one was open the whole time.
Tiernan: My lawyers will want every penny of that trust accounted for. All of it, Mrs. Ashgrove.
The crowd parted without being asked. Halfway to the doors she looked back once, and the whole hall saw that the maid had never been a maid at all.
