Chapter 6 · Text modeStory view

Elias answered my one word in under a minute. An address, a time, and nothing else.

Elias: Kessler tower. Eighth floor. Eight o'clock. Ask for no one.

Graham had called four times already. I left the phone face down on the seat and drove.

Camille: Camille Graham. For Mr. Kessler.

The woman at the desk checked her list and nodded. My name was already there, written in his hand.

The eighth floor was silent. No assistants, no coffee, no small talk.

He stood at a long table with papers spread across it like a map of something about to happen.

Elias: Sit. You'll want to read before you sign.

My name sat on the top page. Camille Graham, co-chair, Kessler Arts Fund, City.

Under it was a budget line and a donor list with Percy's name near the top.

Camille: This is real.

Elias: I don't offer things I can't hand over.

He gave me the shape of it. The press lunch on Friday, one hour after Lila's launch.

Elias: Same day, same city. Two rooms. The city will pick one.

Camille: And you want them to pick yours.

Elias: I want them to pick you.

My chest went tight in a way I did not want to name.

Camille: My rule is simple. You never lie to me. Not in public, not in private, not ever.

Elias: And not to me.

Camille: I just said that.

Elias: Say it back so we both hear it.

Camille: No lies. Not even the polite kind.

Elias: Good. Politeness is how people get buried alive.

Camille: What does standing together look like in public?

Elias: It looks like nobody in that room can tell us apart on anything that matters.

Elias: You don't contradict me. I don't correct you. We decide before we walk in.

Camille: And in private?

Elias: In private you can tell me I'm wrong. I would prefer it.

My phone lit up on the table. Graham. Fifth time.

Elias: Answer it. I'd rather you didn't carry it around all morning.

I answered, because I wanted to hear what he would say with his whole chest.

Graham: Camille. Thank God. Where are you?

Camille: Working.

Graham: I've been sick about last night. I mean it. But Lila is a wreck. She thinks you'll blow up her launch.

His apology had her name stitched through it, and every stitch pulled tight.

Camille: You're not sorry. You're scared.

Graham: That isn't fair.

Camille: You always come back to her. Every road you take ends at her door.

Graham: She's my oldest friend. You're my wife. That means something.

Camille: Say what it means. Out loud. I'll wait.

The line went quiet. I could hear him choosing whichever words would cost him least.

Graham: It means I need you. You keep everything running. You know that.

Need. He said it like a compliment, and it landed like a bill.

Camille: I know exactly what I am to you.

Camille: I'm the one who stays. I'm done with that job.

I hung up. My hand was steady. That was new.

Elias: He'll call again.

Camille: I know.

Elias: Will you answer?

Camille: Not today.

Need is not love. Five years of my life had taught me the difference, and I learned it in his kitchen, in his bed, and in every room where I kept quiet.

Graham needed me the way a house needs a roof. Nobody ever thanks a roof.

Elias needed a partner who could read a room. That was not love either.

But it was a chair with my name on it, and I wanted that more than I wanted to be held.

Camille: Give me the pen.

I signed on the line. The ink went down black and final.

Then I felt it, small and mean and warm in my chest. Pleasure.

Lila would see my name on the letterhead by Friday morning. I wanted her to see it.

Elias: You're smiling.

Camille: Is that a problem?

Elias: Only if you think this is a game. It isn't. The knife cuts both ways.

Camille: I know what it is.

Elias: Then keep your hands clean and your aim steady.

He offered his hand. Not for cameras. There were none, and nobody in that room but us.

His palm was warm, and he held on one beat longer than the deal required.

Elias: Friday, one hour after her launch, you walk in beside me. Not behind me.

Camille: Beside you.

Elias: And if they ask what you are to me?

Camille: I'll tell them the truth. I'm your partner.

His mouth moved, almost a smile, and my whole body noticed.

I left before I could do something I had not planned.

In the elevator, my phone buzzed. Lila.

Lila: Friday. Wear something quiet. The cameras will be on me.

Camille: I'll be somewhere.

The press release was already drafted. My name, his name, one line under both.

Elias: It goes out at nine tonight. After that, there's no quiet way back.

I looked at my name on the screen. My hands were cold and steady.

The wife who stayed had a chair now, and a rule, and a city about to find out.
