Chapter 18 · Text modeStory view

The night before the Dunley Trust Dinner, the family table was full of candles and careful talk.

Alfred Dunley stood at the head of it with his glass raised, and the room went still for him.

Alfred: Tomorrow night, at the Dunley Trust Dinner, every donor in Bellcrest will watch this family name a new director.

Alfred: And the director will be my daughter, Marielle.

Marielle's fork hung in the air, and she forgot all about her dinner.

Alfred: Marielle. My daughter. Director of the Dunley Conservatory.

The applause came all at once, and her ears rang with it.

Three years of zero budgets and borrowed chairs, and her father had said her name at his own table.

Benedict stood by the sideboard with a wine bottle in his hand, and he watched her face.

That room had made him small for three years, and tonight she stood in the middle of it, shining.

Priscilla rose before the applause had died, and her red dress moved like a flag.

Priscilla: My cousin, a director. How wonderful.

She circled the table, and her hand closed on Marielle's arm just above the elbow, tight enough to leave marks.

Priscilla: Benedict helped pick my dress for tomorrow.

Priscilla: He has such good taste for a tray boy.

The words went through Marielle like cold water.

In her cousin's arms, in front of her mother and father, she felt her face go hot and then white.

Veronica: Priscilla, do not tease her on her big night.

Veronica was smiling when she said it, and two cousins at the far end laughed into their wine.

Priscilla: I am only saying he helped me choose the red one.

Priscilla: Make trouble for me at the board, cousin, and your husband loses his job before the plates are cleared.

Benedict set the wine bottle down without a sound.

His face did not change, but his hand stayed flat on the table, and his knuckles went white.

Benedict: Priscilla. Come here and say it to my face.

The words were quiet, and the table went quiet with them.

Priscilla's mouth opened, and nothing came out.

For one whole second, the whole family watched her stand there with her mouth open.

Alfred: Enough of that. Priscilla has the taste in this family, everybody knows it.

Alfred: Priscilla will stand at the door with you tomorrow and greet the donors.

Marielle looked at her father, and the light went out of her face.

The announcement was real, but the seat at his right hand was still her cousin's.

Marielle: I should check the seating for tomorrow.

Nobody answered her, because Alfred was already talking to Priscilla.

In the side hall, she pressed her back to the wall and looked at her hands.

They were shaking, and there was no cut this time, and no reason for them to shake at all.

The door opened and closed, and Benedict stood in front of her.

Benedict: Look at me.

Marielle: She said you helped pick her dress.

Benedict: I have never seen her dress. She says things to hurt you, and you let her.

Marielle: I do not let her. She just knows where to put the knife.

Something worked behind Benedict's jaw, and then his face closed like a door.

Benedict: Tomorrow night, let her talk. Let her say whatever she has saved up.

Marielle: Why?

Benedict: Because the whole room will be listening.

He took out his phone, and the screen lit his face from below.

Benedict: Junia. Priscilla Dunley. Everything she has said and done for six months. I want it before the dinner.

Benedict: You are the director. Nobody takes that from you.

The shame still sat hot under her skin, but she held on to his hand and nodded.

Behind the door, Priscilla laughed at something, and the family laughed with her.

Benedict looked at the door and made a decision he did not say out loud.
