The school called at two o'clock. They said Jonah had an incident.
I knew that word. It meant my son got hurt and nobody wanted to say it out loud.
The hallway went quiet when I came through the doors.
Then a boy at the back said it. There she is. The one who killed her husband.
A woman in a green scarf laughed and said murdering bitch, loud enough for me to hear.
I saw Jonah at his locker, small under that big gray backpack.
A boy a head taller slammed him into the metal.
The sound was flat and loud. Like a door closing on a finger.
Jonah went down. His nose hit the locker handle.
Blood came out fast, all over his collar, all over the floor.
Jonah: Mom. Mom, I'm fine.
I got down on my knees in it. It was warm through my coat.
A teacher said she would call an ambulance. Another said she would call the police.
Nobody touched my son.
Jonah: Don't say anything, Mom. Please.
Jonah: They want you to say something. Don't.
My ten-year-old son, bleeding on the floor, telling me how to survive.
Then his eyes went strange. Like he was looking at something behind me.
He said my name once and went limp.
The blood kept coming. It did not care that he was a child.
They put Jonah in an ambulance. I rode in the front. Nobody spoke to me.
Helena was already in the corridor when we got there. She had beaten us. She always did.
Helena: You.
Her hand came before I could move.
The rings caught my lip. I felt it split. Blood ran down my chin and dripped on the floor.
Helena: Murdering bitch! Look at your son! Look what you did to him!
She grabbed my arm and dug in. Her nails left four red half moons.
Helena: You would not open your mouth for my son. You will not open it for yours. What kind of cunt does that?
A nurse looked at the floor. A man in a suit looked at his phone.
Helena: Say something! Say one word, you cold fucking snake!
I said nothing. My lip was bleeding and my hands were still.
One word from me and Paul would take Milo at three fifteen. It was three twelve.
They let me sit with him. Helena stood at the window with her back to me.
Jonah's hand was small and hot in mine. There was blood dried in his hair.
I did not cry. That was the thing they hated most.
Detective Hale came in at four with his badge on his belt and his mouth already tight.
Hale: Your son is in a bed because people think you killed your husband.
Hale: And you are still not talking. What kind of mother lets that happen?
Helena: The kind that watches. She watched my son die and she will watch yours.
Helena: I will have those boys taken from you tonight. I have the lawyers. You have nothing.
I believed her. I believed every word.
Jonah's eyes opened. He looked at me for a long time.
Jonah: Mom. Why won't you say anything?
I held his hand tighter and did not answer him. That was the worst thing I ever did.
Then the door opened.
Ethan stood there with his hands loose at his sides.
Ethan: Clara.
He walked past me. He did not look at me. He looked at Hale.
Ethan: I killed Simon Voss.
The room went still. Even the machines seemed to stop.
Hale: What did you just say to me?
Ethan: I killed him. Take the cuffs off her and put them on me.
Helena: You are lying! You piece of shit, you are lying for her!
Ethan: I killed him. Not her. Never her.
My armor cracked. I felt it go, like ice on a lake in April.
My mouth came open. For the first time in eleven days, I had a word ready.
