The False Dragon Bride

A dragon lowers its huge head close to a small defiant woman.

I wanted to hit it. I would have spent a broken hand on it gladly.

It said, You reek of grief and cheap lies. It is a bad perfume.

You are standing in a house of borrowed things. Borrowed things are owed.

Synopsis

Every year, the dragon court chooses a bride for Prince Lucan. The queen says the choice keeps the border safe. The chosen woman gets a crown, a bonded dragon, and no way out. Tansy Dorset has no title and no family left worth naming. She enters the selection under a false house name, carrying her dead brother's rider pin and a plan to get close to the crown that burned him. Prince Lucan is the living face of that crown. His mother owns every rule, and the court forgives nothing. If anyone learns why Tansy came, she will not just lose her place. She will pay with her life.
